My father was stationed in the Aleutian Islands during WWII in the 344th fighter squadron. This patch was his. It is leather and hand painted. Slight signs of wear from age. The photos are from where he was stationed.

The344th Fighter Squadronis an inactiveUnited States Air Forceunit. Its last assignment was with343d Fighter Groupstationed atShemya Army Airfield,Alaska Territory.

History

Activated as a P-40 Warhawk fighter squadron in Alaska duringWorld War II. Engaged in combat missions duringAleutian Campaign, 1942–1943. Switched to long-range P-38 Lightning fighters in 1944 and flew long-range attacks against Japanese shipping and airfields in northern Japan from its base at Shemya. Inactivated in 1946.
