MACV-SOG – Military AssistanceCommand Vietnam, Studies and Observation Group MilitaryAssistance Command, Vietnam – Studies and Observations Group (MACV-SOG) was ahighly classified, multi-service United States special operations unit whichconducted covert unconventional warfare operations prior to and during theVietnam War. Established on24 January 1964, the unit conducted strategic reconnaissance missions in theRepublic of Vietnam (South Vietnam), the Democratic Republic of Vietnam (NorthVietnam), Laos, and Cambodia; carried out the capture of enemy prisoners,rescued downed pilots, conducted rescue operations to retrieve prisoners of warthroughout Southeast Asia, and conducted clandestine agent team activities andpsychological operations. The unitparticipated in most of the significant campaigns of the Vietnam War, includingthe Gulf of Tonkin incident which precipitated increased American involvement,Operation Steel Tiger, Operation Tiger Hound, the Tet Offensive, OperationCommando Hunt, the Cambodian Campaign, Operation Lam Son 719, and the EasterOffensive. The unit wasdownsized and renamed Strategic Technical Directorate Assistance Team 158 on 1May 1972, to support the transfer of its work to the Strategic TechnicalDirectorate of the Army of the Republic of Vietnam – part of the Vietnamizationeffort. The U.S.military (and MACV-SOG personnel) kept tight security over knowledge of theunit's operations and existence until the early 1980s. Although there had beensome small leaks by the media during the conflict, they were usually erroneousand easily dismissed. More specificwas the release of documents dealing with the early days of the operation inthe Pentagon Papers and by the testimony of ex-SOG personnel duringcongressional investigations into the bombing campaigns in Laos and Cambodia inthe early 1970s. Historiansinterested in the unit's activities had to wait until the early 1990s, whenMACV-SOG's Annexes to the annual MACV Command Histories and a Pentagondocumentation study of the organization were declassified for the Senate SelectCommittee on POW/MIA Affairs' hearings on the Vietnam War POW/MIA issue. One earlysource of information (if one read between the lines) were the citations issuedfor the award of the Medal of Honor to MACV-SOG personnel (although they werenever recognized as such). One USAFhelicopter pilot, two U.S. Navy SEALs, one U.S. Army medic, and nine GreenBerets earned the nation's highest award on SOG operations.
