17 1/4“ x 11 1/2”

This is the last item I have from a large estate petroliana collection. For 40 years It was a wall-mounted sign at a Mobilgas station in Rushville, Indiana. Taken down in the 1980s, it was stored inside as part of a larger collection of Mobilgas and Standard Oil signs.

Condition

This painted sign was outside for 40 years. It’s weathered and faded; the red you expect to see on Pegasus almost completely gone. It’s very authentic with lots of rust, but the metal is whole; no loss on the material. Rusty on the back.

All of my signs are completely original. They were exposed to the elements for years; so they bear the wear you might expect for a vintage fuel sign. See photos.

More

I have a good inventory of vintage signs including Sunoco , Marathon, Phillips 66, Shell, STP, Citgo, and more. Located near New Castle, Indiana.

Mobilgas Pegasus History

1931

When Vacuum merged with Socony, the red Pegasus – a symbol of speed and power – was adopted as its U.S. trademark. In 1968, Mobil adopted new-look Pegasus service stations. The red Pegasus remains among the most recognized corporate symbols in American petroleum history.

1939 – 1955

In 1939, Mobilgas underwent a significant transformation in its brand identity, marking a pivotal moment in its history. The iconic Pegasus, a symbol of speed, grace, and mobility, remained at the heart of the logo, but it underwent a thoughtful redesign. The essence was to streamline the logo’s appearance, resulting in a sleek, minimalist representation. The once elaborate emblem was now elegantly simplified into a single blue outline encircling the majestic Pegasus.

The typeface assumed a refined and professional demeanor, exuding dependability. The new logo struck a harmonious balance between professionalism and friendliness. This redesign in 1939 reflected Mobilgas’ commitment to evolution and solidified its enduring presence as a trusted and iconic brand in the automotive industry.
