Original photograph of Irene Castle (1893-1969), famous ballroom dancer in the 1910 - 1930s. Photographed in one of her gowns she was so noted for, London, July 14, 1923, an International Newsreel photo and original description attached to back of photo. For shipping, I have placed photo with attached newsreel description behind in a frame for protection. Frame included (8\"x10\"). Photo is 6.5\" x 8.5\", sepia tone. Photograph is in excellent condition, no tears or stains.

Irene and Vernon Castle were a world renowned dance couple and instructors of ballroom dance. They appeared on Broadway and in silent films in the early 20th century. They created a dance known as the Castle Walk, as well as introducing American ragtime dances such as the TurkeyTrot and the Grizzly Bear. Irene was known as the best dressed woman in America. Hemlines rose due to Irene\'s influence in fashion when the modern dances required the woman to dance backward! The Castles are credited with spreading the popularity of American ballroom dances to Europe before and during WW I. Vernon Castle, enlisted in the Royal Air Force, and was killed in 1918 during a mission with a student pilot.
