This Zuni fetish was hand carved by an excellent Zuni artisan, Douglas Martza. I did medical work in the Zuni Pueblo many years ago, and traveled there again just after Covid. I was the first person outside the tribe to visit after the restrictions were lifted, and was shocked to find that so many of the elders had died from Covid. Really devastating. I met Douglas and wanted to support his work, so I asked him to create two fetishes for me, of which this is one. He did so, includinginlayingturquoise eyes on this horse, and had them completed by the time I left the village a few days later. I’ll be listing them both…a horse and a rattlesnake. Very meaningful to me, but as with my lifetime of collectibles, the time has come to find them new homes.
I am in the process of selling my collectibles accumulated over 60 years of passionate collecting around the world. They will include natural history specimens, living plants, art pieces, antiquarian books, and numerous other treasures. All proceeds, after expenses, will be donated to the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance global conservation projects.
