DETAILS: Original pinback button issued by Operation Match, the first computer dating service in the United States.Circa1965.


Operation Match was the first computer dating service in the United States, begun in 1965 by a group of Harvard and Cornell computer students. Users filled out a paper questionnaire that they mailed with a $3.00 fee. The questionnaire was geared to young college students seeking a date, not a marriage partner. Questions included \"Do you believe in a God who answers prayer?\" and \"Is extensive sexual activity in preparation for marriage part of \'growing up?\'\" The questionnaires were transferred to punched cards. and processed on an IBM 7090 computer at the Avco service bureau in Wilmington, Massachusetts. A week or two later, the user received an IBM 1401 print out in the mail listing the names and telephone numbers of their matches. It was hugely successful at first, with students acrosscampuses in new England using the service. They then attempted to expand nationally. However, shortly afterwards, theyfound themselves short of capitol and had to cease operations. Even though the venture was not successful, it would soon spawn a number ofcopycats who eventually would succeed in what has today become known as online-dating. If only the creators of Operation Match
knew what they hadstarted and how it would endure for decades after its demise.
