Together with halftone portrait of Oscar Wilde from 1883, the year when hemade a short return to New York.###Wilde arrived in America in January 1882 for a four-month-longlecture tour which stretched into a nearly yearlong stay.
This signature was obtained in Bridgeton in southern New Jersey,40 miles south of Cherry Hill, close to the Delaware Bay.
It was there on October 26, 1882 he spoke to a crowd at Moore'sMusic Hall on the theme of "The Decorative Arts."
It did not go well.
Referring to him as "the notorious Oscar Wilde," one contemporary newspaper account of the event was critical of his Irish accent ("For agraduate of Oxford, he is neither a credit toward himself or his college."),his voice ("inelegant and grating to the ears of those who listened"), and hisstage presence ("wholly unfit for the lecture platform.")
This was Wilde's next-to-last lecture before leaving America.
Oscar Wilde (born Oscar Fingal O'Flahertie Willis Wilde) was anIrish poet, playwright and novelist.
Works include The Picture of Dorian Gray (1891),Salomé (1893), The Importance of Being Earnest (1895).
