ORIGINAL - CIVIL WAR - GENERAL GRANT AT LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN NOV. 1863 PHOTOGRAPH

RARE EARLY ITERATION OF CIVIL WAR UNION GENERAL GRANT AT LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN NOV. 1863 PHOTOGRAPH

Photograph most likely byR. M. (Robert “Royan” Michael) Linn (b.1829 - d.1872), an Ohio photographer, who set up a studio and gallery above Umbrella Rockatop Lookout Mountain, including during the Civil War (and after), and took many images of Union officers at this location. This image captures Gen. U.S. Grant with four of his officers inspecting Lookout Mountain at the spot where Gen. Hooker's men had waved a victory flag just a few days earlier on November 25,1863, Individuals in photo identified from left to right: U.S. Grant, Gen. J.A. Rawlins (seated, with back against tree), Gen. Webster behind him, Col. Clark Lagow leaning against tree, and Col. William Hillyer in right foreground, plus an orderly seated by the dirt path.

Rare early iteration with clear image that shows a rarely seen soldier ofU.S. Grant's party on the very upper right corner on the top of a lookout outcropping that is rarely seenafter the photographers cropping was done. Also a small shack near the center just above the subjects can be seen. This shack may be the studio and gallery house ofR. M. (Robert “Royan” Michael) Linn (b.1829 - d.1872), the Ohio photographer who set up during the Civil War.
