Description

Up for Consideration is a Incredible Original 16th Century Original Northern Italian 16th Century Cabasset Helmet (c1550-1580)

c1550-1580

Authentic Italian Spanish Cabasset Morion Helmet, Late 16th Century (1550-1580) Heavy \"Shot-Proof\" construction with narrow brim and plain grommets. This helmet was constructed of a munition quality but from two pieces of iron rather than a single sheet which was heated and hammered into shape. This particular example has been period soldered together. Above the narrow brim is a row of rivets that would have included a band of leather on the interior. This leather band would have been stitched to a fabric helmet lining. Neither the leather nor the liner are present. Cabasset, from the Spanish word capacete, meaning “little cap” was a light helmet similar to the Burgonet helmet, cabasset helmets were used in the 16th and 17th centuries by light cavalry and infantrymen throughout Europe.
This helmet is in good condition for its age and has had previous restoration work done to it. When we acquired it, the helmet had been covered in black paint. When we professionally removed this paint to bring out the original surface it was obvious that the helmet had some modern and poor metalwork done to preserve it. We showed this period Helmet to an armor expert at the former Higgins Armory Museum” in Worcester, Massachusetts many years ago and we were assured that the helmet is period mid to late 16th century. Period Soldering had been done to attach the two sides together and there is modern patch welds done during sometime in the 20th century, as well as a couple areas of machined filing done. There are still small open seams towards the top portion of the helmet and remanence of the black paint inside. The expert at The Higgins Armory believed that this Helmet may have been originally formed out of two separate pieces and had seen rare examples of this technique in the past though very rare. As for condition, there are a few areas of loss, rust and damage (see images) but nothing that should not be expected from a 400+ year old iron helmet. As the Iron Rivets along the brim are without brass the decorations and with the two-piece design the assumption is and it is believed that this helmet was made cheaply and fast for immediate military use. The helmet measures 12\" H x 11\" L x 10\" W and weighs just under 3.0 lbs.

A great example that comes more than ready for further research and display.

A Beautiful choice example which had previously been on display in a Private Museum in Worcester, Massachusetts.
