Lot Consists of an Original 1968 DICK GREGORY FOR PRESIDENT DOLLAR BILL - MARK LANE FOR VICE PRESIDENT.This is the infamous "Vote For Dick Gregory" One Dollar Bill.

This is Version 1 with: "VOTE FOR" in lower left corner. (Version 2 had "WRITE IN"). Bill has "FOR PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA", "ONE VOTE - CANNOT BE BOUGHT SOLD OR TRADED", a Peace Sign and "NOV. 5, 1968" on face. Rear of bill has "THE INDEPENDENTS OF AMERICA" on top, "IN GOD WE HOPE", "ONE MAN, ONE VOTE" in center and "TAKE THIS ONE OPPORTUNITY TO EXPRESS YOUR FREE CHOICE, THIS COUNTRY IS REDEEMABLE. TAKE THIS TO THE POLL WITH YOU AND VOTE FOR, DICK GREGORY PRESIDENT .... MARK LANE VICE PRESIDENT" on bottom.

Most original copies and the original plates were seized in October 1968 during a raid by the FBI.The main contributing factor to the seizure came from the bills resembling real United States currency and that as such, they worked in many of the dollar bill change making / vending machines of that time.

Dick Gregory (Richard Claxton Gregory) ran an unsuccessful campaign for President of the United States in 1968 as a Write-In Candidate of the Freedom and Peace Party. Gregory was also an outspoken critic of the Warren Commission findings that President John F. Kennedy (JFK) was assassinated by Lee Harvey Oswald.
