This is an older mask likely from the mid-20th century. It was acquired by a collector from Africa in 1990, according to their records, and has an old label from that time period.
The Bwami Cult was/is a kind of social club in the Lega community. Much like Odd Fellows in 20th century America, they had rituals and initiation creremonies - where masks like this were used. The kaolin eye shading is a characteristic of these masks. See all the photos. This mask has chipping and old age cracks from shrinking at its top and bottom and retains old rafia fibre fringe. 15 inches tall by 6 inches wide not counting the fringe.
