Contemporary Netsuke \'Kirin\' made by Serhii Polunin. Created in 2024 year.Size approx 2x2 inches. Made of Carved Stag Horn.The Kirin is a Japanese (Qilin in Chinese) mythical creature resembling a unicorn. It symbolizes abundant harvests, personal safety, and justice. Often depicted with a dragon-like head, deer antlers, fish scales, and horse hooves, the kirin was believed to appear in court, punishing wrongdoers and protecting the innocent. In Japanese folklore, it was also known as “ikkakuyu,” meaning “one-horned beast.” These wise creatures preferred solitude, inhabiting the mountain forests of Japan. Unfortunately, kirins are now extinct due to deforestation for housing construction.
Netsuke made in traditional Antique Japanese techniques with modern touch. Only natural colours used.
