Dick Grayson loses his shirt ... and ignites a trend too long in coming
Launching in 2016 as part of the linewide DC REBIRTH initiative, DC Comics' fourth ongoing NIGHTWING series continued the ongoing saga of DICK GRAYSON, the third super-hero ever created and BATMAN's very first -- and longest running -- sidekick also known as ROBIN THE BOY WONDER. It wasn't until the series' fifth year, with Nightwing #78 (May 2021) and the new creative team of writer TOM TAYLOR and artist BRUNO REDONDO, that the title really found both its stride and an appeal to a larger, broader audience. For the first time in a long time, Nightwing was breaking new ground and looking better than ever.Fast forward another eight months, and Nightwing hit another milestone with Nightwing #87's(Feb, 2022) Variant Cover by cover artist Jamal Campbell. The cover reveals the hero of the series asleep on his couch, holding his new puppy (a.k.a. Bite-wing). For the first time ever on a cover for his own series, however, the Dick Grayson we see also happens to only be half-dressed. He's shirtless -- his muscular torso obscured only in part by his new little dog.
As a character. DICK GRAYSON as NIGHTWING has long been considered --- as well as actually voted to be in several third party polls and contests over the last few decades -- the sexiest male superhero in published comics. As far back as Marv Wolfman and George Perez' New Teen Titans (Vol 1, 1980), fans have seen Dick Grayson in various stages of undress across the pages of many a DC comic book. But Dick shirtless on a Nightwing cover... that was a first. And perhaps, it was just a fluke.
Or then again, maybe this was the start of something. One week after Nightwing #87 dropped, DC's ROBINS limited series kicked in to gear, with its first issue's Variant Cover giving us a sweaty Dick Grayson sitting in a gym ... shirtless. Hot damn. A shirtless Dick in just as many weeks. Clearly, this wasn't a fluke. Robins would continue its "shirtless Robins" theme with Issue #2's shirtless JASON TODD and Issue #3's shirtless TIM DRAKE. DC was enlisting all the mature Bat-Boys for their beefcake.
Nightwing #92 (July, 2022) kicked off the second huge arc of Taylor and Redondo's run. It was a "big issue" and it dropped with five (5) different covers. Artist DAVID TALASKI was the talent behind two of the five, and he boldly continued the newly established "shirtless" covers trend that began just five months earlier. Available as both a TRADE VARIANT and as the issue's INCENTIVE VARIANT COVER with VIRGIN ART, Talaski's shirtless, muscular Dick Grayson demonstrates to Bite-Wing just how flexible he truly is.The history of DC's "shirtless variants", at least for our purposes of discussion here, ends there -- although we will say Talaski's Variant Covers weren't the end of Dick Grayson's pecs and abs making appearances on the covers of DC comics. Indeed, their cover art inspired Dick's shirtless appearances on two later Variant Covers, both of them depicting the character wearing the same Chevron-designed "square-cut" shorts (and nothing else) first introduced by the artist. Today, two years after their debuted, Nightwing and the Robins' shirtless variants have become the hardest-to-find, most collectable Variant Covers for any of the Bat-boys they feature. They're sexy -- and they're exactly what your collection deserves.
