NGC Widows Mite Prutah JUDAEA Hyrcanus I & Antiochus VII Issue FIRST JEWISH COINJohn Hyrcanus I, nephew to the renowned Judah Maccabee, ascended to the position of High Priest of Jerusalem in 134 BCE. His inaugural year in office was marked by a significant challenge: the invasion of Judea and the besiegement of Jerusalem by Seleucid King Antiochus VII Sidetes. The siege endured for over a year until Hyrcanus reluctantly agreed to terms of a truce. These terms included the dismantling of the city walls, payment of 3,000 talents of silver to Antiochus, reassertion of Judean acknowledgment of Seleucid authority, and various other stipulations impacting the ancient Judean populace. Notably, the treaty also granted Hyrcanus permission to mint bronze coins at the Jerusalem Mint, albeit bearing the name of Antiochus. This lead to arguably the first Judaean / Jewish coin issue. Additionally, this coinage represents the earliest documented instance of a prutah being minted. These prutahs are famous as they are the " Widow's Mite " coins mentioned in the Gospels.
