Item#3342 What you see in the pictures is a particular type of agatecalled "Iris Agate." It's an agate in which colors are producedwhen light shines through it. The rainbow of colors that you see isproduced in this agate because the layers of agate were formed very closetogether. When light shines through this, it acts as a "diffractiongrating", producing rainbow colors. This is the same kind of processyou get when you mist water into the air and the sun is just at a perfectangle. Another example of this would be in a parking lot after it rains,and you see lots of colors on the puddles caused by thin layers of oil on thesurface of the water.

The best way to view your agate slab is with the light from a cell phone especially in a dark room. This slab is so good that I could see rainbows in my kitchen with the normal lighting.

Thisspecimen measures 3 1/4 inches long, 3 inches tall, and 1/8+ inchesthick. It weighs 2.0 ounces (56g).
