REV:WITHING WREATH OF PALM AND LAUREL2-LINE LEGEND "WATERLOO / JUNE 18 1815".DEPICTED ON THIS MEDAL ISKING WILLIAM II OF THE NETHERLANDS WHEN HE WAS CROWN PRINCE OF ORANGE. IN 1815WILLIAM'S FATHER (WILLIAM I) PROCLAIMED HIMSELF KING OF THE NETHERLANDS, AFTER NAPOLEON ESCAPED FROM ELBA, AND WILLIAM WAS CROWN PRINCE FROM THAT TIME UNTIL HE BECAME KING IN 1840.AFTER THE FRENCH INVASION OF 1797,AND SUBSEQUENT ANNEXATION OF THE NETHERLANDS BY THE FRENCHEMPIRE, BOTH FATHER (WILLIAM I)AND SON (WILLIAM II) WENT INTO EXILETO FIGHT AGAINST FRANCE.WILLIAM ENTERED THE BRITISH ARMY IN 1811. HE SERVED AS AN AIDE-DE-CAMP TO THE DUKE OF WELLINGTON AND FOUGHT THROUGH SEVERAL CAMPAIGNS IN THE PENNINSULARWAR. HE STARTED WITH THE RANKOF LIEUTENANT COLONEL, AND WAS MADE A COLONEL THAT SAME YEAR. IN 1812 HE WAS AIDE-DE-CAMP TO THE PRINCE REGENT, AND IN 1813 WAS PROMOTED TO MAJOR GENERAL. HE WAS GOOD NATURED AND SHOWED GREAT COURAGE, WHICH MADE HIM A POPULAR COMMANDER WITH THE BRITISH FORCES WHO NICKNAMED HIM "SLENDER BILLY". HE RETURNED TO JOIN HIS FATHER IN THE NETHERLANDS IN 1813.

IN 1814 HE WAS AGAIN PROMOTED TO LIUETENANT GENERAL, AND THEN TOFULL GENERAL. HE JOINED THE ALLIED ARMY WHEN NAPOLEON ESCAPED FROM ELBA IN 1815. WILLIAM WAS COMMANDER OF THE ALLIED FIRST CORPS AT THE BATTLE OFQUATRE BRAS,AND AT THE FATEFUL AND ICONIC BATTLE OFWATERLOO, WHERE HE WAS WOUNDED.
