(V)THE LETTERING IS ENGRAVED INSTEAD OF IMPRESSED. This is a rare medal because so few of the wartime SANF members had sufficient prior service with the SANS which was practically non-existent before the onset of WW2. The fact that the medal has been engraved rather than impressed is testament to its rarity.The South African Naval Service (SANS) was established in1922 after WW1. Its main purpose was costal survey work and three small ships were purchased for this task. The naval defence of the country was undertaken by the British Royal Navy based in Simonstown. The Great Depression caused the government to sell of their naval ships and pay off all but two officers and a handful of ratings. Matters changed rapidly with the onset of WW2. The SANS became a wartime unit called the South African Seaward Defence Force. It took over responsibility from the Royal Navy for minesweeping, anti-submarine activities, sea rescue and communications along the South African coast. In 1942 the Seaward Defence Force was combined with the Royal Navy Volunteer Reserves (South Africa) and the amalgamation named the South African Naval Force (SANF). At its wartime peak the SANF operated 87 ships worldwide with a total complement of over 10,000 men. The extracts from South African military archives show that P.O. D.B. Kirsten joined the SANS in 1936 and was discharged from the SANF(V) in 1945. He took the oath of allegiance at the start of WW2 on becoming a member of the SA Seaward Defence Unit which became the SANF in 1942. The motivation for the award of the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserves Long Service and Good Conduct Medal took into account both Kirsten’s peacetime service with the SANS and his wartime service with the SANF. A minimum of 12 years service was requited with wartime counting double.His award was approved in 1944 along with two other seamen of lower ranks.
