Wonderful Civil War Knapsack, named to the unit and soldier who carried it. It features the box-style pattern that was widely popular among state militia units in the antebellum through early Civil War years. These knapsacks would have been commonly seen at early war battles like Manassas or Balls Bluff.

In ink and pencil there appears to be the name \"David Kantor\". Google and FindaGrave turned up many with that last name - all of whom to be from the New York City area, and of Jewish descent - which makes for an interesting angle from a collecting standpoint. There were far fewer soldiers of the Jewish faith that fought in the war than there were of other faiths. I was not able to find him in the Civilwardata compilation, so I believe he served in one of the myriad of militia regiments or companies that existed in the prewar years. I am also fairly certain that he was from NY, as this was purchased from an old estate in North Bay, New York over 30 years ago. Definitely worthy of further research. Named knapsacks are rarely found.

The knapsack remains in fair condition, showing signs of age, use, and wear. No straps or hooks remain, with only two roller buckles on the bottom. The back of the pack had torn along the wooden frame, and was glued back in place. Overall feel is dry and fragile - as are most. Please see the pictures for more detail.
