United States Army Private Albert Smith Halley was born June 28th 1879 in Deadwood South Dakota. He moved with his parents to Rapid City, S.D. At the age of 4. At 17 he attend Oberlin, Ohio college.


Albert enlisted as a Private in the 5th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, Company F. during the Spanish American War. His regiment was held at Tampa Florida, instead of going directly to Cuba, the transport on which he would have traveled aboard was sunk. For his service during the war he was issued this Spanish War Service Medal #20799 which he smartly had engraved with his name.


After the war Halley attended the School of Mines and was member of the first intercollegiate football team. Later he transferred to Leland Standford university in Palo Alto CA, where he took mining engineering. He was graduated with a BA degree in 1904.


Returning to Rapid City he entered the banking business with a number of there Black Hills interests and was elected president of First National Bank in 1920, succeeding his father. He remained with the bank for several years.

In 1917 he purchased the Slagle house at 9th and Columbus streets. He married Martha Stone Woods on Aug 21, 1906.


His interests included banking, elswhere in the Hills, mining, quarrying, and railroads.

During World War 1, he served as county chairman for war loans and civilian defense, was a director of the Commerical Club, member of the Rotary club, affiliated with the United Spanish War Veterans and as a charter member of American Institute of Mining Engineers. In his later years he was president of the Rapid City Securities Co. Mr. Halley resided in Rapid City for 60 years.


Albert S Halley a Spanish War veteran, prominent banker and Hills development figure, died at his home on December 7th 1943 at 64 years old. He is buried at the Mountain View Cemetery, Rapid City, South Dakota.
