Here is a rare fossil from the world-famous fossil beds of Fossil Lake, Green River Formation, Wyoming. From the Eocene, 52 million years ago, near what is today Kemmerer, Wyoming.
It is a rare ventral view of the skull of a Mioplosus, a voracious predator fish from the ancient lake. In addition, we found both the "positive" and the "negative" side of the skull. That is extremely rare, as the vast majority of fish fossils from Fossil Lake show the regular view of the fish lying on its side.
The skull measures about 1.85 inches. The plates are about 3.5" by 3.1" (positive piece), and 5.4" by 4.1" (negative) piece. The 2 pieces together weigh 1 lb. 11.9 oz.
We admit we weren't really sure what this was, so we asked some experts in Kemmerer, Wyoming, and got the answer it was a Mioplosus, rare ventral view. The small sharp teeth of Mioplosus are also visible.
A great fossil pair of the same fish head, for people looking for something different and possibly educational.
