Now what does the Bible have to do with Florida? Maybe not so much the Bible itself, but a place mentioned in the Bible. A place possibly located in Bristol, Florida...
The Garden of Eden.
Florida has been called \"God\'s Waiting Room\" for most of the state\'s existence.
When tourists first began arriving here in the late 1800s, it wasn\'t for the beach. Nope. It was for their health. To get better, or to die trying. Whichever came first.
Now it is Florida\'s appealing retirement communities that have earned the state its beloved nickname.
Well, hopefully if Florida is \"God\'s Waiting Room,\" it brings us much closer to Him. But are we close enough to Him to have been hired on as the caretakers of the original Garden?
If so our old Florida Man better up his game. Especially up there in Bristol because that is the very place where the Garden of Eden is said to be.
Elvy Edison Callaway was born in 1889 in Alabama. After becoming a lawyer, he moved with his wife and children to Florida around the mid 1920s and quickly moved into the political arena.He soon changed his mind and by the 1930s he was back at his office in Lakeland, tending to his own practice.
Around 1949 or so Callaway was in the midst of a Spiritual Awakening and guided by a 98 year old metaphysical Spiritualist priest he met in Orlando, bought a large portion of land in Bristol, Fl.
Land he would eventually believe to be the Garden of Eden.
Before you scoff, there are some interesting coincidences with the traditional Bible story.
1. The Torreya Tree. Also called Gopherwood. Like the cedars used to build Noah\'s Ark. This ancient tree, a survivor of the Ice Age, does not grow anywhere else in the world except for this tiny prehistoric pocket that would eventually become the Appalachian Mountains. It and a few others. The Appalachian Basin is home to many rare plants that only survive there.
2. The Rivers. The Garden of Eden in Bristol is at the crux of 4 Rivers, just like it says in the Bible.
3. Ancient lands. Back when the Earth as we know it was still forming, the Continents were all one land known as Pangea. When they broke up, a major Continent formed called Gondwanaland. This Continent would become Africa, most of the Middle East and Florida until it would break apart creating the Continents that we know today.Most of the Southeastern U.S. coastline was part of Gondwanaland.
The park is now labeled Torreya State Park and is open for camping or exploration most days throughout the year.
