Mida Tafoya (b.1931)
This is a classic piece of her pottery. It is a black polished bowl deeply carved with an Avanyu (water serpent protector of Pueblo People) encircling the piece. It is signed on the bottom incised in the clay. Her pottery is created in the traditional hand-coiled method. She digs her clay from the Santa Clara Reservation, uses natural slips, natural paints and fires her pottery outdoors. Her pottery features deeply incised carving and polished finish.She cuts away the background, leaving the design standing in relief. The design and body are then stone polished.

Mida Tafoya is a Santa Clara Pueblo artist from the well known Tafoya family. She is the daughter of Christina Tafoya and granddaugher of Santa Clara Pottery Matriarch Serafina (Sera Fina) Tafoya. Mida began making pottery in 1945, and was taught by her family.Condition:Very good condition for a pot that is over 50 years old, there are no chips, cracks, restoration, or repair. This pottery bowl is in good condition as shown. There are minor blemishes which are typical of handmade pottery.
