The creation of high-quality seat furniture in the 18th century required a team of highly specialized designers, joiners, carvers, gilders, and upholsterers to complete a single piece. Many chairs were ordered as a part of a larger suite, all with matching upholstery. These distinctive ornaments are based on three splendid European chairs in the Museum's collection: Armchair, mahogany and beechwood, needlework (British, ca. 1765), Armchair, carved and gilded beechwood, modern silk lamps (French, Paris, 1779), Side Chair, carved and gilded beechwood, 18th-century silk tabby (French, ca. 1780-85).
