Northwest Africa 16449(NWA 16449)

Mali

Purchased: 2023 Apr

Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CVox3)

History: Purchased by Mbark Arjdal in April 2023 from a Malian dealer.

Petrography: A. Irving,UWS, and J. Boesenberg,BrownU) Well-defined unequilibrated chondrules (apparent diameter 990±480 µm, N = 26) containing devitrified glass, plus irregularly-shaped, very fine-grained and some much coarser-grained CAI, are set in a fine-grained matrix (~40 vol.%, opaque in thin section) containing pentlandite, Cr-bearing magnetite and chromite, but no metal. Phases identified in one very large CAI (~7 × 3.5 mm) include gehlenite, spinel, perovskite and anorthite. Some thin veins of secondary calcite are present.

Geochemistry: Olivine (Fa38.5±35.1, range Fa0.6-95.2, N = 17), low-Ca pyroxene (Fs1.4±0.7Wo1.9±1.3, range Fs09-2.2Wo1.1-3.8, N = 4), subcalcic diopside (Fs1.8Wo32.3), diopside (Fs1.0Wo43.2), Al-diopside (Fs0.5±0.3Wo51.3±1.5, range Fs0.3-0.9Wo49.7-52.7, Al2O33.8-6.7 wt/%, N = 3), plagioclase (An79.8-88.9Or0.0, N = 3), magnetite (Cr2O30.4-1.5 wt.%, N = 7).

Classification: Carbonaceous chondrite (CVox3).

Specimens: 24.4 g including one polished thin section atUWB; remainder with Mr. M. Arjdal.
