Master Koichi Kamata鎌田孝市(1925-2004), Yajiro School, 1994.Miyagi Prefecture, Japan.Signed.Collectible.

Kamata-san leaned the art of traditional kokeshi apprenticing with his father, Bunichi Kamata, a Master kokeshi maker in the Yajiro Shool.

The figurine is in excellent vintage condition.

YajiroSchool of Kokeshi Art

Thecreators of Yajiro kokeshi hail from the village of Yajiro-machi, a smallfarming village between two tall mountains near Kamasaki Onsen in MiyagiPrefecture.

Yajiro dolls are someof the most brightly painted dento kokeshi, with a veritable rainbow of colorsused, from the traditional red and black to green, yellow, and even blue andpurple. The upper body usually has a hand-painted collar with horizontalstripes encircling the body and vertical stripes running below the waist to thebase of the doll. However, Yajiro dolls can also be found with a series ofchrysanthemum petals running down the front of the body, or a branch of plumblossoms as the only decoration. Some, also have a painted beret-like featureor a bun on their heads, similarly painted with a red center spot. Yajiro kokeshicome in a widest range of shapes and the majority have distinct waists andwider bases, making them very stable.

Yajirokokeshi have been made from cherry wood, camellia, and maple, but the preferredwood is white dogwood (mazuki).

Dento Kokeshi

Dento(\"traditinoal\") kokeshi have been produced mostly in the Tohokudistrict in northeastern Honshu, Japan. Traditional kokeshi is characterized byits distinct style that remains little changed. Old kokeshi are praised fortheir authentic character and are often collectible items.
