Pack of 10. Each rock or mineral specimen measures approximately 1-2 inches in length along its longest side. Because of height, length can differ. Some stones can be thicker and not as long. Each rock is unique and will vary in shape, size and appearance. The pictures are meant to show examples of the variety of sizes and shapes that are in stock. Your samples will be chosen at random. Lodestones are made up of the mineral magnetite, and are a form of naturally-occurring magnets. As magnets, they are capable of attracting iron. It was because of lodestones that magnetism was originally discovered. Those magnetic properties allowed them to be hung from a cord so that the lodestone could spin and turn, creating the first crude magnetic compass. Indeed, the name lodestone, when translated from Middle English, can mean \"course stone\" or \"leading stone\". It is also one of the only minerals that can be found in a naturally magnetized state. Storing them with a neodymium magnet will increase the magnetism. Please note that this lodestone is not meant to function as a refrigerator magnet or strong magnet. The iron filings are included to show naturally occurring magnetism.
