ANTIQUE ALBUMEN PHOTOGRAPH with handwriting at the bottom of the mount: "Bombay Harbor."This is an uncommon view of the harbor. There are a couple of islands in the distance. There are ships and boats of all sizes. There’s a distinctive building to the left and lower lying buildings elsewhere. There are fine carriages in the central portion, presumably to pick up travelers from ships that will dock. There are wagons pulled by oxen, transporting soil to the construction site where there are workers, mostly wearing turbans. Bombay Harbor, now known as Mumbai Harbour, was a major port in the 19th century, when this photograph was taken.
SIZE. Photo: Approximately 7 7/16 x 9 5/16 inches. Mount: Approximately 10 15/16 x 14 1/16 inches.
CONDITION. Photo: Discoloration or fading along left edge. A few small spots. Otherwise, very good. Mount: Split, as indicated by the texture on the back. Slightly warped in that it doesn't lie flat. Tiny tear at top edge. Half inch vertical tear at bottom edge. Front has some soiling. Front and back have discoloration around 3 edges.
APPEARANCE. Good to very good tones. Excellent depth of field. Masterful composition.
