LISTED HERE A MAGNIFICENTLARGE MOUNTEDPRINT FROM THE ARCHIVES.
The mainstay of heavy freight power on the Great Western was the fleet of 28XX 2-8-Os, a design which dated back to 1903. These engines were notable as the first 2-8-Os in the country, and apart from superheating, the basic design underwent only minor alterations in half a century. Here we see No 3864, from the last batch of the'2884' class, built in 1942, heading a down freight at Cowley Bridge Junction, Exeter on 16 July 1958. The wartime-built locomotives originally had solid cab sides, but windows were added from 1946 onwards.
