This here is an embroidered wall carpet made probably in the 1920s or so by one of the Alliance Israelite schools. A real museum piece. It shows one of the founders of the modern Zionist movement and confidant of Theodore Herzl, Moses Hess. These carpets were made in Palestine to raise money for the fledgling Zionist movement.

These types of carpets were sold in the past on Sothebey\'s Judaica sales and were estimated at $2000! I am selling it here for much less!

Condition:Generally very good. There is a circular cup stain on the lower left hand portion of the carpet. Some fading. Tear on lower left corner. Tassles on top all but gone, much better at bottom, see scans.

Measurements:4 ft length x 25.5 inches width.

Background of such carpets

Considered the first modern Jewish organization, The Alliance Israelite Universelle was founded in Paris in 1860, as a response to the Damascus affair of 1840 and the Mortara case in 1858. Their manifesto stated the Alliance would \"serve as a most important stimulus to Jewish regeneration\" and emphasized the need for solidarity on Jewish matters. The aims were \"to work everywhere for the emancipation and moral progress of the Jews; to offer effective assistance to Jews suffering from anti-Semitism; and to encourage all publications calculated to promote this aim\". Schools were established throughout Eastern Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa, eventually expanding its educational programs to include France, Canada, Spain, and Belgium.
