MIGUEL DE CERVANTES – The spiritual father of Don Quixote

Miguel Cervantes de Saavedra, born in 1547 near Madrid, led a truly adventurous life.

After his studies the talented writer joined the Spanish navy at 22 years of age, fought in the historic sea battle of Lepanto which was to be a formative influence on his life, was made a slave by pirates and did not return to Spain until five years later.

There unfortunate circumstances landed Cervantes behind bars, where for the first time in years he found the leisure to continue with his literary production - and began work on his most famous book: Don Quixote.

Originally conceived as a parody of the then popular tales of chivalry, Don Quixote developed into a lively panorama of contemporary Spain, and today is considered one of the most influential works of world literature.

Cervantes' innovative narrative techniques were groundbreaking for the age of Romanticism and influenced whole generations of European writers.
