Early original vintage photograph shows a man and wife who were two members of the Mono tribe of Indians in Sierra Nevada area of California. The Mono (Monache) are a Native American people who traditionally live in the central Sierra Nevada, the Eastern Sierra (generally south of Bridgeport), the Mono Basin, and adjacent areas of the Great Basin. Caption on back reads, “MONACHE PIUTE - MAN & WIFE - 1903”.This photograph was one of the original outtakes from the C. HART MERRIAM COLLECTION from the Bancroft Library in Berkeley.Photograph measures 4 3/4 x 6 3/4 inches and is in excellent condition with no bends, tears, or creases and is very sharp and has strong tones with good contrast and clarity.
