BY JOSEPH RODGERS / SHEFFIELD

This is a Rare, Antique Minty,Unsharpened silver handle Gentleman's Sheffield made Quill bladed Pocket Knifeby the renowned Sheffield Maker Joseph Rodgers. This is an extremelyhigh-quality pocketknife made in Sheffield, the knife capitol of the world atthe time, and for hundreds of years prior. Joseph Rodgers, along with IXL, werethe two premier Sheffield cutlers from the 18th through the 19th centuries.Joseph Rodgers was a much more prolific maker than IXL; and in my opinion, madethe best cutlery ever produced on this planet. As early as the 18th Century, the Rodgers name was associated with excellence, with the highest artisanshipand most perfect workmanship. Joseph Rodgers unquestionably made some of thebest cutlery ever produced on this planet, The Joseph Rodgers trademarks wereassociated with excellence, with the highest quality materials and the most perfectartisanship and craftsmanship. The firm won Gold Medals & acclaim atnumerous Domestic & International Exhibitions. See the excellent articlesin the Sheffield Exhibition Knife on Sheffield handmade knives and JosephRodgers.

Fancy quill knives were afashionable accessory and necessary accouterment for any Gentleman of Means. This small thin quill blade would be used for opening envelopes, cuttingstring, or sharpening a Goose quill that was then dipped into an ink well forwriting or affixing one's signature to a document. Ladies would also use thesesmall pocketknives in sewing. This Gentleman's writing accessory could becarried in their pocket and used as a desk accessory. Only a wealthy andlearned Gentleman who know how to read and write during this period would needor have been able to afford a fancy handled silver handled quality pocketknifelike this one. Quill knives were made with both the special shaped quill blademade for cutting tough goose feather ends, and also in pen blade styles.Portable metal pocket dip pens with a tip that slid in and out of a smallpocket tube came into use in the mid 1830's, so a Gentleman would still need apen blade to open envelopes, cut string, et al. Also, quill knives continued tobe used for decades as a fashion statement, well after the dip pens were widelyavailable and in common use.

This small, delicate knife wascompletely handmade by J. Rodgers Master Sheffield Cutlers using only simplehand tools, i.e., hand forged & hand ground blades, hand tempered springs, hand fitted, et al. This mint, unsharpened piece is about 4 5/8" open,3" long closed x 9/16" wide x 3/16" thick. Weight is only .4 ofan ounce or 14 grams. The fine 3 dimensional highly detailed oblong swell end silverstamped handles are unusual, and probably a new and exclusive knife pattern byJ. Rodgers, who made thousands of different knife patterns. The back spring hasthe early feature of wrapping around the pommel about 1/4 of the way around tothe front side. Fancy file worked silver overlays on back springs tend to beearly, and this one has early style fine line and cross hatch file workeddecorations. This hand filing was omitted when later knife patterns becamestandardized and was soon discontinued due to the extra work and cost andbecame obsolete. The liners are Iron, most often found on 1830's or priorSheffield knives. The silver handle has a small raised diamond shapedescutcheon on both sides that is unengraved. This knife has a single, thin, delicate elongated pen shaped knife blade that is about 1 5/8" long with aswedge ground on the top obverse side, and Maker marked on the ricasso with thevery early Maker Mark in four lines of tiny letters, "W (crown) R","(R)ODGER(S)", "SILVER", "STEEL". The blade has afull tip, with a 1/2 stop; a feature found on quality knives. The blade snapsopen and closes with a snap. The ricasso has the early style"kick"; i.e., a small protrusion used to set the depth of the bladeinside the handle to prevent the blade edge from bottoming out on the inside ofthe back spring and chipping / bending the edge. Note as sometimes occurs onAntique handmade knives, the top of the nail nick is parallel to the hilt, withthe full nail nick of the blade is just slightly below the top edge of thehandle. The blade opens easily if you use a small fingernail to lift the smallblade out of the handle; or to use a thin knife blade opening tool. Thisfeature was quite hard to photograph, but you can see the ends of the nail nickin image #14. The blade has no wobble side to side when open but has a little movement forward and backward in the open position. The blade snaps open and closes with a snap.

The Crocus of Iron final polishwas done on wooden wheel with a leather band coated with adhesive andexceptionally fine black powder that was painstakingly applied to AntiqueSheffield blades. The blade is unsharpened with all of the original Crocus ofIron polish. As expected, there is random patterns of naturally occurringspidering on both sides of the blade and one 3/16" long line of aging onthe top edge next to the nail nick. All this patina is very desirable naturallyoccurring aging that takes well over a century to form. This natural aging isexpected and desirous on W Crown R period knives; and demonstrates that thisCrocus of Iron polish, found on Sheffield knife blades, is original. Withoutthis spidering, one might think this minty knife was made yesterday. Completewith the correct style and shape 1830s box.
