ABOUT: Touken Ranbu (刀剣乱舞) is an online web browser game by DMM and Nitroplus. Players assume the role of a Saniwa sage (審神者) who travels into the past to defeat evil forces that are trying to change the course of history. As a sage, you have the ability to bring famous historical swords to life as touken danshi (刀剣男士). Your duty is to bring these blades to life, create an army, and defeat the enemies! He was once owned by Nene (Kodai-in) (1549-1624), the wife of warlord Toyotomi Hideyoshi. Mikazuki was finally given to Tokugawa Hidetada after Nene\'s death (1624), and stayed with the Tokugawa shogun family until modern times. He now resides at the Tokyo National Museum. Munechika, the maker of this tachi blade, lived in the mid-Heian period (794-1185) and is famous as an expert craftsman active when Japanese sword-making techniques were first being established. He is reputed to have lived on Sanjô Avenue in Kyoto during the Eien era (987-989), and is thus known as Sanjô Munechika. The phrase Tenka Goken refers to five outstanding and famous Japanese swords. The Tenka Goken are five of the greatest Japanese swords. They are the Dōjigiri Yasutsuna, Mikazuki Munechika, Onimaru Kunitsuna, Ōdenta Mitsuyo, and Juzumaru Tsunetsugu. Mikazuki Munechika: This sword was created between the tenth and twelfth centuries. The blade length is 2 shaku 6 sun 4 bu (about 80 cm). It has a somewhat narrow width. While the sori is strong at the tsubamoto, there is very little at the kissaki. The sori of the blade becomes more gradual towards the kissaki, creating a beautiful tōshin curve. “Mikazuki” comes from the uchi–noke hamon that looks like a crescent moon (mikazuki). The tōshin, which features a series of small crescent moons, is reputed to be the most beautiful of the Tenka Goken. Currently, the Mikazuki Munechika is held by the Tokyo National Museum and often exhibited. If you are interested in this uniquely beautiful Japanese sword, be sure to take the opportunity to see it only display.
