The San Francisco restaurant “Coppa’s” becamelegendary in the early 20th century as a gathering spot for “bohemianartists” and “writers”, especially after they decorated its wallswith curious and intriguing murals. Thoughthe murals remained in existence for scarcely a year, because of the devastatingfires that followed the earthquake of 1906, they have been forever tied to the restaurant’smystique. The murals were drawn in chalk crayon by artists who frequented therestaurant on Montgomery Street.

Legend has it that proprietor Giuseppe “Joseph” Coppa papered hiswalls a hideous red that offended their esthetic sensibilities, impelling themto mask it with their humorous, nonsensical drawings. An alternativeexplanation is that Copa asked the artists to draw on the walls and that he chosered as a good backdrop. Coppa himselfwas a painter. restaurant-ingthroughhistory

Maynard Dixon was an American artist. He wasknown for his paintings, and his body of work that focused on the American West. Dixon moved to San Francisco in 1893 andstudied with Arthur Mathews at the “California School of Design”, whichis now the “San Francisco Art Institute”. He exhibited at the “California Societyof Artists, the Bohemian Club”, and the “San Francisco Art Association” amongothers. It is also known for the “Bauble”which adorned a wall at Coppa’s.

“The Bauble” was on Coppa’swalls and is also on this uncredited postcard.The card, which had to be published before 1906,is in good condition except for some surface damage on the lowerright corner and minor edge wear. The imageand reverse are clean and clear.
