These writing boxes are SECONDS and the price has been reduced accordingly. These were made for us in a small batch as a trial run, and they do not hold up to our standards. If you purchase one of these, you may expect to find variations in the staining, wood coloring, wood filler, scratches, issues with hardware, issues with the felt lining and ribbon handles, uneven writing surface, and other imperfections.The writing surface may not be completely flat due to knots and wood filler. Additionally, the felt peels off, and the satin ribbon handles come unglued easily. Also, when fully extended, the bottom of the desk may not sit level on your table, as the (mis)placement of the hinges prevents the parts from laying flush with each other. Please see last few photos for examples of possible issues.
We do NOT recommend purchasing these if you want to write on the desk, due to the issues with the writing surface.
SO, WHY BUY THIS BOX??? These are perfect for an artisan who would like to fix them up, or for someone who appreciates the worn look. They will offer great storage for your writing and stationery needs. They will make perfect stage or re-enactment props. They still look really cool, are generally functional, and they are much larger than our other writing boxes.
This antique-style writing box features multiple hidden compartments. The top of the desk folds down to reveal storage that will accommodate 8-1/2\" x 11\" sheets of paper. Both compartments below the velvet writing surface will hold half sheets of paper and other accessories. The middle compartment under the velvet writing surface is 3\" deep at the back and slopes to 2\" deep and is 12\" x 7\" on the inside. The tiny drawer in the back of this compartment is 5-1/2\" x 2\" on the inside. The front compartment under the writing surface is 2\" deep at the back and slopes down to 1-1/4\" deep and is 10-3/4\" x 6-1/2\" on the inside. The two inkwell compartments are 2-1/2\" x 2-1/2\". The compartment between them under with lid is 6-1/4\" long x 2\" wide x 1-1/4\" deep. Because these are made by hand, all measurements are approximate and are accurate within 1/4\".
