This amazing piece of Mexican folk art is a rare signed-Oaxaca carving by Manuel Jimenez & Sons. The vibrant colors and intricate details of this handmade alebrije are a testament to the skill and craftsmanship of the artist who invented the culture and movement. The Father of Oaxacan woodcarving, Manuel Jimenez Ramirez (1919-2005) is known and collected in museums and private collections world-wide.
His style is recognized by its bold colors, intricate designs and imaginative depictions of animals. Also, Manuel carved from cedar as a way to distinguish his carvings from others as the craft became more popular. This piece is signed by both him and his sons Angelico and Isaias Jimenez, his sons are still making wood carvings following their fathers tradition and style.
