On offer, we have \"London As Seen By Charles Dana Gibson\" with an autographed card. The card \"Yours Through Life, C.D. Gibson\" is written in blue ink and measures 2 1/2\" X 4\". This 1897 First Edition book was published by Charles Scribner\'s Sons. The large portfolio has its original binding of printed paper and cloth spine with beveled edges. This has approximately 84 illustrations with narratives about Victorian London. It is divided into sections titled \"London Streets\", \"Audiences\", \"Parks\", \"Salons\", \"People\" and \"A Drawing-Room\". The book measures 12\" X 18\" and weighs 4 pounds 7 ounces. About the artist/author: Charles Dana Gibson (1867-1944) was an American illustrator best known for his creation of the Gibson Girl, an iconic representation of the beautiful and independent Euro-American woman at the turn of the 20th Century. His illustrations were published in Life and other magazines for more than 30 years. (Wikipedia) The autograph card has been authenticated by my rare book seller who researched this for me.
This book very good condition for its age of 126 years. The cover shows wear with deep scuffs and badly worn corners. Inside, there is a lovely old bookplate. The binding is a bit loose. Some pages have a smudge/fingerprint at the bottom of the page. The rest of the pages are clean and clear. The autographed card has residue on the back from where it was once glued in an album. As I am not an expert on rare books, please view my photographs for more description. My friend who collects everything is moving to a much smaller home and parting with some of his treasures.
