Laymon began buying aspirin tablets in bulk, putting them in coin envelopes which he stapled onto cardboard sheets to be set on counters in stores, service stations and restaurants.Thus began what later became the biggest distributor of \"counter carded merchandise\" in the world. Laymon\\\'s two most famous products were Laymon\\\'s Aspirin and Twenty Grand razor blades.At its peak, Laymon\\\'s World Products Company even had dealers in several foreign counties. When Laymon decided to retire in the 1960s, he sold this business to Beurt SerVaas of Indianapolis, who liquidated the company.Downtown shops move outIn downtown Spencer, long gone are the days Sharon Parks remembers when people went to the town square to do all their weekly shopping.\"Everything was downtown,\" Parks said, naming the wealth of businesses: two drugstores, a five-and-dime store, a hardware store, department store, clothing store, jewelry store, furniture store, men\\\'s clothing store, ladies\\\' dress shop, two banks and frozen-food locker business.There were several downtown hotels, and six trains came and went every day from a bustling trains station located where the north courthouse parking lot is now.Then things changed. As longtime shopowners reached retirement age, they closed their businesses instead of finding new owners. One by one, during the 1970s and \\\'80s, the storefronts became empty.Attorneys and other offices took over. In an unusual move, manufacturing businesses filled in the vacant places. A walk around the square would reveal a medical polymer manufacturing business, cable television components manufacturing, two printing plants, an extension cord company and a small research firm.After surviving that death knell, the downtown was hit hard in 1990 and again in 1997 when devastating fires destroyed landmarks.In 1990, a half-block of 100-year-old buildings on the west side of town square was demolished by flames. In 1997, fire raked through two pre-1900 buildings and damaged a third.Some thought downtown Spencer might fade away because of the losses. But the heart of the town refuses to die.Successful revitalizationOld-timers and newcomers have pitched in to keep their hometown vibrant.
