Large Fluorescent “Crazy Calcite” Sterling Hill Mine Ogdensburg NJ:

This is a large 2 pound, 10 ounce specimen of calcite and dolomite with grains of black franklinite and brown andradite collected from the mine run dump of the famous Sterling Hill zinc mine in Ogdensburg, NJ. Commonly called \"Crazy Calcite\" by local collectors of fluorescent minerals due to its \"crazy\" fluorescent pattern of the red-orange calcite contrasting with dark red/maroon/black patches of dolomite (any purple you see is lamp reflection). The franklinite and andradite are non-fluorescent. This rock measures approximately 5.5 x 5.25 x 2 inches. The fluorescent photos were taken using a shortwave ultraviolet (254nm) 9-watt tube lamp with an appropriate filter - specifically designed for illuminating fluorescent specimens. A common unfiltered \"black light\" will not work!This rock has a flat side allowing it to stand nicely without propping for display.
Minerals in this rock were identified based on the fluorescent response and by visual inspection only. I am not an expert.
