ORIGINAL &VINTAGE VERMONT AGRICULTURE PHOTOGRAPH (S) from theUnited StatesDepartment of Agricultural, Soil Conservation Department.

DETAILED information given on thebackside. PHOTOGRAPH MEASURES 4 x 5 1/8 inches, including margins. CONDITION: Very good

DATE: April 1956

LOCATION: Lyndes Farm, Marshfield, Vermont

SUBJECT: Flood spillway

4 PHOTOGRAPHS: 1) Lookingdownstream from a point on the original spillway invert. Erosion has been aided by seepage and overland flow from the hillside at right. Soil: heavy silt / WSA: About 1200 feet / Pond: About 2 acres surface. Spillway was constructed with a level lip type outlet at lower end. Erosion apparently began at the outlet and worked back to the pond, creating a series of near vertical steps in the spillway as it did so; 2) Looking upstream at end of rein. Concrete pipe barrel. Two sections of the barrel have beenundermined and displaced andare just visible above the water in the foreground The dam filled above the barrel has slipped and been washed away as a result of this failure of the barrel. Differential settlement of the dam fill has cause several of the pipe joints to separate under the fill. Beaver have plugged the upper end of the pipe, reducing the flow to about 25% normal. The misc (?) apparatus (sp) was used by the farmer in an effort to unplug the pipe; 3) Looking across portion of the pond toward the dam, with the flood spillway on the far end of the dam. That there is ice on the pond. Original water surface elevation shows as lineacross the dam; 4) Looking towards the flood spillway from a point in the pond. Original spillway elevation to left of the eroded gully. Original pond surface elevation shows as a a a line across dam at left. Note 16\" rainbow witch just jumped in foreground
