Reverse painted image of the iconic Rat Fink on a 34 x 48” piece of 1/4” clear acrylic.
Rat Fink is one of several hot rod characters created by artist Ed \"Big Daddy\" Roth, one of the originators of Kustom Kulture of automobile enthusiasts. Roth conceived Rat Fink as an anti-hero to Mickey Mouse.
What\'s cool and interesting here is that the signature would have had to be signed in reverse as well.How\'d he do that? Signed his name with a wet pen/marker onto a material that allowed it to stay wet in time for him to transfer, in reverse onto the acrylic. Once transferred, the signature was not as dark as desired, so he went back over it. Viola! A reverse signature that shows normal through the acrylic.
Of course without a photo or some other evidence to prove it is actually Roth\'s signature will leave it open to debate if this is authentic. It also cannot be proven that it is not. The signature is spot on when compared to other examples, and Roth was known to have utilized this reverse painting technique on other works.
The first photo of the signature was outside, in natural light. The second under artificial light.I also included a shot of the back, with the sunlight shining thru it.
It came from the estate of...”Samuel L. Ogden, Jr. passed away on October 8. He was a retired schoolteacher, teaching in the Portsmouth Virginia school system for over 30 years. Sam was a classic car enthusiast and an avid slot car racer, enjoying many local races and traveling to hobby shows with several friends. He was an active member of the Tidewater Automotive Modelers Society.
