The town that is no more swept away by the 1964 flood.

Several timber towns and agricultural outposts along the Eel, Van Duzen and Klamath rivers had withstood the flood of 1955 and weren’t expecting another for another 100 years. But as the water rose above the ’55 flood levels in December 1964, residents of towns such as Klamath, Pepperwood, Holmes and Shively watched as their houses and livelihoods were enveloped and carried away by the swift waters.

Klamath River

By Christmas Day 1964, the town of Klamath was under 15 feet of water.

The California Department of Water Resources flood report released in January 1965 listed the town as having been 98 percent destroyed. It was one of 12 communities listed as being destroyed or partially destroyed as a result of the flood.

The town relocated afterward, but a sign currently posted on Klamath Beach Road serves as reminder, reading “Old Klamath Townsite — Town of 850 Destroyed 1964 Flood.”

Aerial photographs of the town showed a silt-laden desolation shining from the flood waters with the occasional outline of a house protruding. On the ground level, the shell of a remaining house relayed the message, “SOS HAVE BABY,” on an outer wall.
