Hi everybody. This is a 4.75\" x 7.5\" page signed at the top by Julia Ward Howe, the author and poet known for writing \"The Battle Hymn of the Republic.\" This page was removed from a bank signature book from National Exchange Bank in Newport, Rhode Island. The book was used by the bank from 1884 to 1895. During the late 1800s, banks used signature books as a record of customers\' signatures. The bank would have customers sign the book, then the bank would use their signature for future reference to prevent fraud and forgery. Howe and her husband Samuel maintained a home in Newport, Rhode Island throughout part of their lives, which helps provide provenance for her signature in this bank book. Howe passed away in 1910 in nearby Portsmouth, Rhode Island at the age of 91.
