John Wereat Rev War dated letter Georgia Governor / Congress twice signed 1777:
$450.00

Revolutionary War dated letter written by Georgia’s John Wereat to an unnamed correspondent in April 1777. Wereat was a delegate for Georgia in the Continental Congress and later Governor of Georgia. Wereat spent a year as a prisoner of the British in Charleston, South Carolina after initially being taken captive in Augusta in 1780. In December 1787 he presided over the state convention that unanimously ratified the new Federal Constitution.

Here, Wereat speaks of farm land for sale in and near Augusta, the price of Colonel Grierson’s land, and the ongoing Revolution, stating that “Your account of the defeat of our enemies by General Dickinson gives me great satisfaction , and I most sincerely wish a continuance of success to the American arms, and that Tyranny and oppression may be forever rooted out of this land.” The letter is twice signed by Wereat.

Very good condition overall; one small hole in the paper (see last photo)
