John Lee Shirasaya Katana - Natural Color John Lee Shirasaya Katana - Natural ColorThe hand-forged samurai sword from the John Lee series is a masterpiece of Asian forging. The blades of the swords are handmade from 1045 high carbon steel and hardened in the traditional way. In addition, the sharp blades are slotted with a Bo-Hi (fuller) to reduce weight, and the handle ends are particularly long and are attached to the hilt with two bamboo pegs (Mekugi), allowing the swords to be completely disassembled. The collars of the blades (Habaki) are made of metal and the handles and scabbards (Saya) are made of wood. In addition, the Shirasaya is a specific sword assembly designed to ensure better preservation of the blade at night or in case of prolonged disuse. The advantage of untreated magnolia wood lies in its low acidity and the absence of other substances that can damage the leaf. It receives no post-treatment, absorbs moisture from the sword and channels it away, allowing the Katana to remain dry and rust-free. The Shirasaya often bears a signature (‘Sayagaki’) with details about the origin of the blade, such as the place and time of forging, as well as the name of the swordsmith and advisor. As the carrying of sharp weapons was banned by the Emperor in the late 19th century, the ornaments and accessories around the hilt and tsuba were trimmed, leading to the birth of the Shirasaya design as we know it today. The appearance of this Katana with a wooden sword or stick allows the wearer to go unnoticed and still carry it with him. Details: - Total length (without sheath): approx. 100.5 cm.
- Blade length: approx. 72.5 cm.
- Length of handle: approx. 28 cm.
- Blade material: carbon steel.
- Weight (without sheath): approx. 940 g.
