Japanese Itchimastu Doll with Kimono and Drum - a 400+ year old tradition:

This is a Japanese Itchimatsu style doll purchased in the late 20thcentury in Kyoto, Japan. Dolls have been part of Japanese culture for many years including this beautiful one.

Silk-skinned or "mask-face" dolls became a popular craft in Japan in the 1920s and 1930s, representing women of various periods of Japanese history, particularly the Edo period. In 1927 the Japanese Friendship Doll exchange and the creation of 58 exquisite dolls used as a diplomatic gesture of peace and goodwill, put these dolls on the map.

This doll is a testimony to workmanship at its best. Representing a young female entertainer, it wears a traditional hand-sewn kimono, with one little white foot sticking out, and a miniature hand drum on its left arm. There is only one hand, typical of this style.

The white porcelain head is made of plaster, that once dried is applied with seashell powder and gelatin to achieve the shiny luster. The minute face details are painted with great care.

On top of the face is the hair, made out of thread and ironed before glued on. On top of her head, she wears a gold-colored traditional hat.
