Signed, handwritten 1884 letter, offering to help New Yorkers buy land from impoverished southern farmers at low prices, as the former Confederate general himself had done.
Autograph Letter signed: "James Longstreet", 2 pages, 5¾x9. Atlanta, Ga., 1884 April 17. To E.S. Marsh, Esqr, New York. In part: "Your favor of the 15th instant received. I was frequently offered lands last fall for six dollars per acre cash, for which renters pay three dollars per acre, giving Sum upon their crops. I presume a great number of acres can be purchased in similar cases to-day and will investigate and report upon terms if you or your friends are inclined to purchase. The owners of lands are poor, and the great mass of farmers are poorer. The owners find it difficult to pay taxes on large tracts of land and obliged to sell. The poor farmers give [1 word illegible], which are not really high when you know of the produce, and liens on the crop. It is not very uncommon for the poor class of farmers hiring twenty to fifty percent for their supplies, to their merchants. The latter holding a lien on the crop for payment. You mistake in your idea that lands will not be bought. The temptation for large profits is too great to go unimproved, by northern and Foreign persons. Parties are now daily looking after lands and daily making purchases. A few days ago, 7,000 acres were offered for $35,000. Ten years hence it will be worth $100,000. I enclose suggestive slip of newspaper. Very truly yours". The concluding four lines and signature are on top of the first page. General James Longstreet (1821-1904) had commanded a corps at 2nd Bull Run, the right wing of Lee's Army at Antietam, a Corps at Gettysburg and the left wing at Chickamauga. Recognized today as one of the Civil War's finest generals - Robert E. Lee called him his "war horse" - Longstreet surrendered with Lee at Appomatox. After the war, he became what other southerners called a "scalawag," a white man who accepted Reconstruction, including equality for blacks, and joined the Republican Party. President Grant appointed him Collector of Customs in New Orleans, and President Hayes named him in 1880 as ambassador to the Ottoman Empire. His postwar politics earned the ire of unreconstructed Confederates, who wrote military histories blaming him for the South's defeat. When Democrat Grover Cleveland was elected President in 1884, Longstreet retired to a farm near Gainesville, Georgia. Although the reader of this letter might think otherwise, Longstreet was not a large landowner. He raised turkeys, and planted orchards and vineyards, on 65 acres. It appears he was hoping to supplement his income with some realty commission. Longstreet's detractors would no doubt have seized upon this letter as further evidence that he was betraying the South. Lightly creased. Heavily penned, show-through of ink. Circular mounting remnants at upper and lower blank right corners of verso. Fine condition.See more material from these signers:LT.
