The billionaire writes to a man preparing his biography, saying \"I have forwarded your draft to my attorney... regarding the accuracy of some of the statements and you will doubtless be hearing from him in a few days\"
Typed Letter signed: \"J. Paul Getty\", 1 page, 8½x11½. Sutton Place/Near Guildford/Surrey [England], 1966 July 12. To Charles F. Tonningsen of Washington, D.C. in full: \"I have forwarded your draft to my attorney, Mr. Lansing Hays, 11 Broadway, New York for comment regarding the accuracy of some of the statements and you will doubtless be hearing from him in a few days when he will return your draft to you with his comments.\" Accompanied by: a facsimile copy of a letter from Tonningsen to a Gallery of History researcher explaining the background of the letter, in part: 1988 July 7: \"You asked about \'the nature of the correspondence with Mr. Getty?\' I had been preparing a biography on the business life of Mr. Getty. The business biography also included character, personality, traits that he had that made him effective in his business negotiation. My research had discovered two types of areas that required clarification, additions, or other changes before that material would be usable. Some of my research found differing reportings of a situation or event, where the descriptions held seemingly contradictory or at least disagreeing narratives. Some of my research led me to ask questions to clarify areas where the available background was unsuited to making any meaningful conclusions. I needed additional facts. I had previously asked Mr. Getty in a letter if he would review my draft for accuracy. He consented. The letter you are referring to was his reply to me. I did receive the needed information from Mr. Hays offices. My \'professional position\' at the time had little to do with the biography. I was in engineering with The Boeing Company of Seattle, working towards an MBA at the University of Washington. The biography was to satisfy the last requirement for receiving the degree. The \'nature of the business with Mr. Getty\'s law firm\' is essentially recounted above. Mr. Lansing Hays had been a senior legal advisor to Mr. Getty for many years, in business matters. I expect his firm retained many of Mr. Getty\'s business records.\" In 1916, JEAN PAUL GETTY (1892-1976) and his father, George, had incorporated the Getty Oil Company, an early precursor to the great conglomerate. His multistate operation went international in 1949, when he completed a deal to lease oil fields in Saudi Arabia. During the Depression Era, he had bought extensive quantities of stock and in 1956 he gained control of Pacific Western, which he renamed Getty Oil, ending a 19-year stock battle with Standard Oil. The significantly larger Getty Oil Company became the world\'s largest privately owned business and made the enterprising Getty a billionaire. Although he was one of the world\'s richest men, Getty had a legendary reputation for miserliness. However, he shared his multimillion dollar collection of art and antiquities with the public by establishing the J. Paul Getty Museum--the largest endowment granted to an art museum at that time. Lightly creased. Otherwise, fine condition.See more material from these signers:J. PAUL GETTY See more listings in our BUSINESS & FINANCE (1,118) category.
