From my collection, this is a beautiful and original Venetian broadsword known as una Spada Schiavona, Oakeshott Type 1, dated to ca. 1600.See Oakeshott's European Weapons and Armour, 1980, pages 182-190 for the history and typology of this iconic basket hilted sword.Unlike other Schiavona types, the early Type 1 was specifically a Venetian design and swords of this type were assembled and stamped at the arsenal of Venice.True to that rule, this sword's hilt bears the winged lion stamp of the Venice arsenal on the top of its upper branch.

Condition:
Type 1 Schiavona are scarce in this good condition for its age, with a well-forged rounded-tip blade, no delamination, no crack, no repair and no loose parts.Over 400 years old but still solid, well balanced and firm in hand.
