Colorful Acid Washed Mineral Specimen • From Mexico

The Offering: One brilliant and colorful sample of chalcopyrite from northern Mexico that has been treated with acid to enhance a peacock-colored iridescence. You will receive the exact same specimen that you see in the photos. It is 4.0 inches long, 2.0 inches wide and weighs 17.3 ounces/491grams. You will be the first owner of this mineral.

Background Info:

Chalcopyrite right out of the ground has a brown to copper-red color on fresh surfaces. When these surfaces are exposed to air they oxidize and produce various iridescent shades of blue to indigo to violet. This striking iridescence gives it the nickname peacock copper or peacock ore.

Collecting Location:

The mines of Arizona and Northern Mexico produce large quantities of chalcopyrite, mostly in massive form. The Arizona copper mines, particularly the Magma mine in Superior, Pinal Co. and the Copper Queen Mine in Bisbee, Cochise Co. are known for the colorful specimens that they produce. The specimen that you will receive comes out of mines in northern Mexico, in the state of Chihuahua.
